In one of my reloading books, a hunting story is relayed about the guides reticence towards the hunter carrying a Marlin lever action for heavy African game. You have probably heard or read this, but an African hunter by the name of John "Pondoro" Taylor worked out a system of measuring a cartridges effectiveness, giving more weight to momentum and bullet diameter. Ballistically, at "normal" ranges I think the 350 grain bullets are ideal.īut the foot pounds of kinetic energy do not really tell the whole story of what the cartridge is capable of. I think the 325 Hornady is constructed a little light, and the cartridge is better served with tougher flatnose. The Hornady round is still lighter than a stout handload, and does not have the same foot pounds. ![]() The cartridge was actually designed for the military. Click to expand.I believe it was a 405 gr.
